Preventing Cervical Cancer - The HPV Linkage & Vaccination

A few days ago I was most privileged to be a member of a team doing a documentary on cervical cancer. Our star performer was a young woman aged 39 years with two children aged 14 and 11 years. Her problem started about three years ago when she noticed bloody discharge in her underwear(s) anytime she had sexual intercourse with the husband. She had also noticed increasing pain anytime she had sex with the husband. Indeed the normal moments of intimacy had now become an ordeal! After a few consultations she was diagnosed as having cancer of cervix and referred to a specialist at Korle-Bu for treatment. She also revealed that four other close family members had already succumbed to cancer but did not think so much of these incidents (she was young by then) until recently.

Cancer Screening - The First Step Towards Curbing Ghana's Cancer Burden

Cancer deaths are over 7 million per annum, more than the combined deaths from HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria per year (WHO report 2003). Each year more than 11 million new cases are diagnosed, and more than 7 million people die from cancer (more than 70% of them from low and middle-income countries). It is known that about 40% of cancers can be prevented through avoidance of certain risk factors.

Cancer in Developing Countries – The Hidden Epidermic

In the past I had regarded the field of oncology (study of cancer) as a rather strange feature of non-communicable disease. Indeed as a health professional in a developing country it is very easy to relegate cancer to the background of normal practice considering the flurry of activity around HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. Bu I was compelled to change this perception over the course of time as a hospital pharmacist. The change became complete following my association with the Cancer Society of Ghana (CSG). Over the past few weeks I have been startled by the information gleaned n cancer-a staggering burden in developing countries.
